Frequently Asked Questions
Why stainless steel?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using stainless steel or glass as alternatives to plastic at mealtimes. We chose stainless steel because it is:
- SAFE: it will not leach chemicals into our food and our bodies
- DURABLE: it will not chip or peel, rust, bend, break or shatter, and should last for generations
- ECO-FRIENDLY: it is recyclable, will not leach chemicals into the environment, and will last
- STAIN RESISTANT: and bacteria resistant, and also easy to clean (in the dishwasher)!
What are Stainless Sea products made from and what makes them safe?
Stainless Sea's flatware is made from high quality, food-grade stainless steel. To meet the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements for food-contact safety, a stainless steel product must have a minimum chromium content of 16%. Stainless Sea's products are made of Grade 304 (18/8) stainless steel, which has with a composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Our colorful products are coated with titanium in a process called Physical Vapor Deposition. Titanium also meets the recommendation for food safe materials because like stainless steel, it is inert and won't leach into your food.
Will Stainless Sea products scratch?
Stainless steel is a great choice for flatware as it is non-porous, non-breakable and inert. However, just like other materials used in the kitchen, such as glass, plastic, silicone, ceramic, and bamboo, stainless steel has the potential to scratch when used for dining.
Are Stainless Sea products dishwasher safe?
Yes! But the best way to care for your cutlery is to gently hand-wash with a mild dish soap, soft sponge and hot water. Please do not use bleach or abrasive, heavy-duty cleaning products containing bleach or citrus (preferably phosphate level below 3% and avoiding sodium) and for best results use a low temperature or eco-friendly program setting on your dishwasher.
